A green home is:
A more comfortable home
A well built building envelope with properly sized HVAC:
A healthier home
A more economical home to operate
An easier home to resell
Knowing you at least did something for the planet
This one can't be quantified. We have small children. We want them to live in a healthy environment. End of story.
A green home is:
A more comfortable home
A well built building envelope with properly sized HVAC systems are less drafty and have appropriate humidity levels and temperatures than other houses.
A healthier home
Materials which produce harmful gasses are minimized or eliminated from green homes, as are conditions which may generate mold. Molds and harmful materials, often called VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds, are increasingly linked to health problems. They come from a wide variety of sources including paints, glues, and sheet lumber. Also stressed in a green home is proper ventilation to remove VOCs and other harmful indoor contaminates.
A more economical home to operate
If you are paying attention at all you know energy costs have risen rapidly in recent years. The trend will probably continue. Everyone knows that a more energy efficient house is cheaper to operate. The more challenging part is determining which of the many energy saving features are economically justifiable. Please see the resources below to explore this fascinating topic. Ok, it's fascinating to me. I wrote my thesis on the subject in the 70's in business school!
An easier home to resell
It's simple. Two houses are for sales at similar prices. One costs half as much to operate as the other and has an Energy Star rating or a LEED certification to prove it. Which do you think will sell faster!
Knowing you at least did something for the planet
This one can't be quantified. We have small children. We want them to live in a healthy environment. End of story.
